First, I'd like to send my regards for the Lakers' recent embittering exit from the 2011 NBA playoffs. The teams that you are used to coaching are expected to win Championships annually. Failing to advance out of the Western Conference's second round must be similar to lighting off a dud firework on the Fourth of July; you expect a BOOM , but only get a puffff.
But, lets face the facts: Kobe this year, wasn't the same as Kobe last year; Bynum is a baby; Gasol isn't Pippen, and Fisher lost his groove. This year's Lakers would get lapped in a race by last year's Lakers, the 2000 Lakers or the Bulls in the 90's with Jordan.
The 11' Lakers just may be among the worst-five teams that you have ever coached. This is why I can't dig the emotion out of my soul to feel sympathy for you. The Lakers in 2011 were 57-25. Coaches in the NBA today would kill for an appearance in the Western Conference Semi-Finals, or to take a breath in the playoffs.
In the microcosm of the NBA, you are Bill Gates' oldest son Phil Gates. You are the most privileged child (coach), spoiled with Michael Jordans, Scottie Pippens, Dennis Rodmans, Shaq O'Neals and Kobe Bryants.
I wont deny that your coaching accomplishments are extraordinary. Only your brilliance, calmness and humbleness could handle the many self-centered stars that you have coached. But now, I want to see you walk a mile in the shoes of the less-privileged NBA coaches. As your contract ends with the Lakers, I challenge you to miss the retirement train, ditch the Lakers, and coach the New Jersey Nets, the Washington Wizards or the Toronto Raptors.
Never has a team that you coached missed the playoffs. Could you continue that impressive streak with the 23-59 Wizards or the 24-58 Nets? Myself and NBA fans everywhere are curious to find out.
Sincerely,
A Fan
