Wiz Khalifa is too juicy to hold down, even by Warner Bros. Records.
The Pittsburgh rapper parted ways with the company in 2009 after they kept delaying his debut release, “First Flight.” On Wednesday, he released his eighth independently produced mix tape, “Kush & Orange Juice” and it immediately shot to No. 1 on Google and Twitter – so much for the power of the record deal.
Khalifa’s independent project was released as a free download that can be accessed off his Twitter account. The 22-year-old’s loyal tweeting fan base shot the hashtag #kushandorangejuice to the no. 1 spot.
Cameron Jibril Thomaz – who got the nickname Wiz as a teenager and later adopted the Arabic word, “khalifa,” which means “successor” – released his first album in 2006.
Prior to that, he had steadily released mix tapes, starting with “Prince of the City: Welcome to Pistolvania” in 2005.
He signed with Warner Bros. Records in 2007 after the release of his first album, “Show and Prove,” on Rostrum Records. He left the company after numerous false starts with the release of his album.
“I learned a lot during my time there and matured as an artist during the process,” he told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in 2009. “I’m happy to be moving on with all of my material and having the chance to be in control of my next moves”.
After releasing his second album, “Deal or No Deal,” last year, he turned to the Internet to promote his music. He makes use of YouTube, Ustream and Twitter.
Wiz Khalifa has worked with the rapper Curren$y and opened for Wu-Tang Clan member U-God in 2009 at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York.
