Kendrick Takes the Crown: Common’s Verdict on the Epic Drake vs Lamar Battle
In a recent statement, legendary rapper Common, who knows a thing or two about rap beef shared his thoughts on one of hip-hop’s most iconic battle: Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar.
Rap beef has been a part of the culture since the dawn of hip-hop. A showcase of verbal prowess and a bold assertion of dominance has given rise to countless iconic “diss tracks”, ranging from 2Pac’s scathing Hit ‘Em Up, dissing The Notorious B.I.G, to Eminem’s Killshot, dissing Machine Gun Kelly.
Drake And Lamar Beef One Of The Biggest Ever
According to Common, this rivalry between Drake and Lamar is one of the greatest in the history of hip-hop. The high-profile feud had originally erupted among three hip-hop heavyweights, Drake, Kendrick Lamar and J.Cole.
As things got heated, J.Cole dropped out of the feud. Kendrick and Drake, however, continued the battle and the savagery grew with each track released.
Common recently appeared on the podcast Earn Your Leisure. When asked to share his thoughts on the battle, he said: “The battle? I gotta say, initially, I was like, ‘Wow. This is for real.’ These dudes are going at it because Drake was delivering and then Kendrick came, and Kendrick kept giving him blows. He did what he had to do and he came out the victor. Point blank, he won.”
Common went on to say that he loves how Kendrick Lamar dropped spiritual lessons during his rap battle with Drake.
Despite crowning Kendrick the winner, he didn’t fail to give Drake his flowers. He acknowledged that the OVO Sound founder was among “the most talented songwriters-artists to do music.”
He added that being able to make songs at the level and make hits over and over again says something. According to him, even pop artists that had some big hits don’t last for decades.
Kendrick More Than Just A Rapper
Common also pointed out that Kendrick had a more important role within the hip-hop world. In his opinion, Kendrick is more than just a rapper.
He made it clear that Kendrick was a “masterful artist.” He added that Kendrick had made a statement years before the feud with Drake reached its peak.
“Each one of his albums have been different, unique, dope and that’s what it is. The dude is one of the greatest in any generation,” Common had stated. “He’s a revolutionary and still dangerous.”
Common also added that the recent feud reignited interest in his and Drake’s long-standing rivalry which had been long forgotten.
But he laughed and said: “I’m just watching the battle now. Don’t drag me into this. Let me watch this and just enjoy. I would have to say that it was probably the greatest battle we’ve ever seen.”
