African Artists Eligible For First Grammy Win
The Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles will host the 67th Grammy Awards ceremony on February 2, 2025.
The 67th annual Grammy Awards will air live on CBS on February 2 to raise money for the reconstruction of the greater Los Angeles area after a series of deadly fire disasters.
In 2023, the Recording Academy announced the addition of a new category: best African music performance, which is currently in its second year.
This category aims to recognize “recordings that utilize unique local expressions from across the African continent, highlighting regional melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic musical traditions.”
The Academy correctly recognized that it was past time to properly identify and honor those genres in the early 2020s when African music crossover was on the rise in the US.
Artists Eligible To Win Their First Grammy This Year
As the 2025 Grammy Awards Ceremony is close, several African performers are up for their first-ever Grammy victory, having had a significant impact in recent years.
With artists from all over the continent achieving unprecedented levels of success and recognition, what was previously primarily a regional phenomenon is now a major force in worldwide entertainment.
The awards are also for artists who have reached audiences around the world, especially in light of the continent’s music scene’s recent global prominence.
From Amapiano, dancehall, and reggae to Afrobeats, these performers and genres have gained international recognition and are serious contenders for Grammy gold this year.
Dancehall king and current Billboard cover star Vybz Kartel, dancehall-pop sensation Shenseea, and African music icons Asake, Rema, Davido, Lojay, and Yemi Alade are some of the major contenders for first-time victory.
From global hits like “Sensational” to popular movie soundtracks like “Bob Marley: One Love,” this year’s international music categories highlight the diversity of the world’s many genres throughout generations.
African artists now have the chance to compete with their worldwide peers thanks to the change to a more varied and inclusive Grammy nomination procedure.
Artists such as Davido, Rema, Lojay, Vybz Kartel, Yemi Alade, and so many more are positioned for breakout Grammy moments this year as African music continues to impact pop culture worldwide.
Their first Grammy would not only be a personal achievement but also a victory for African music overall, as African musicians continue to influence not just music but also dance, fashion, and visual aesthetics around the world.
