Black Excellence Dominated The Grammys This Year
Even though we’re just four days into Black History Month, Black excellence has been abundant, and the 67th Grammys was no exception.
Blacks continue to celebrate the Black community’s beauty, talent, and accomplishments despite ongoing efforts to eradicate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).
The first Black CEO of the Grammy Awards, Harvey Mason Jr., spoke about being prepared to take responsibility for past injustices and inequalities, emphasizing how DEI only makes an organization better.
Trevor Noah hosted the event for the fifth consecutive year, Queen Bey finally won Album of the Year with “Cowboy Carter,” the Weeknd made a return, and Kendrick was the star of the show, winning all category nominations and so on.
Highlights Of Some Black excellence on full display At The Award Show
Trevor Noah
Trevor broke the record for being the only comedian to host the award show five consecutive times.
In a heartwarming cold open, the former host of “Daily Show” delighted the audience with humorous, thought-provoking jokes.
He also highlighted the heroic efforts of Los Angeles firefighters who risked their lives to contain the fires that tore through the Pacific Palisades.
Beyoncé
“It’s been many, many years,” Beyoncé remarked in her acceptance speech as the 35-time Grammy winner finally won her Grammy for Album of the Year with “Cowboy Carter.”
It was a huge win for Beyoncé to receive this award, which has only been given to three other Black women and never in this century.
Although she received criticism for the album, it was a compilation of songs that best reflected her heritage, adding to her victory as she won the Best Country Album award.
Kendrick Lamar
“Not Like Us” dominated the internet when it was first released and became an anthem for Black People.
Kendrick Lamar once again made his hometown of Compton proud as he took home five awards from the Grammys, with two being part of the “Big Four.”
Hip-hop’s origins are honored by this diss track, which achieved one of the highest levels of musical achievement as “Not Like Us” is probably the first diss track in Grammy history to win an award.
The Weeknd
The Weeknd surprised everyone by performing two new songs from his recently released album “Hurry Up Tomorrow” at the 67th Grammy Awards.
The four-time Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter’s fans were ecstatic as he attended the ceremony for the first time since boycotting it in 2021.
This showed the shift in his relationship with the governing bodies of the show, as Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the recording academy, stated that “criticism is okay.”
Doechii
Doechii won her first Grammy award when she won the Award for Best Rap Album “Alligator Bites Never Heal,” making her the third woman to ever win the category
“This category was introduced in 1989, and two women have won,” the Florida-born artist corrected herself to include her victory. “Three women have won! Lauryn Hill, Cardi B, and Doechii!”
She acknowledged her community and paid respect to her mother and her team as she went on with her speech.
She reminded Black girls that they can accomplish anything they set their minds to, regardless of what others may say about their skin being too dark or their voices being too loud.
