Berlin is Riled Up by Sorvina’s Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Soul Fusion

Berlin’s music landscape is transforming rapidly, with rising stars and revived genres reshaping the city’s sonic identity.

New York transplants mingle with local talents, creating a vibrant cross-pollination, and award-winning artist Sorvina represents this shifting terrain perfectly.

Sorvina, who was the winner of “Listen to Berlin” last year, blends neo-soul, jazz, and hip-hop with authentic storytelling rooted in lived experience.

Her path from her 2022 Volksbühne debut to her contract with F-Cat Productions is a prime example of Berlin’s capacity to nurture a variety of talent.

Sorvina’s autobiographical style is rooted in her experiences as a Black queer woman.

Her music has a startling depth that comes from the gospel origins of American church traditions.

This combination resonates well with Berlin’s community spaces like 90mil and distinctive events like Fluxbau.

Berlin’s scene is described by The New Yorker as “robust,” with “fresh ideas” appearing on a regular basis.

She credits the “steady influx of Ausländer” with revitalizing German music, bringing new perspectives and collaborations.

Italo disco’s comeback coincides with another musical revival in Berlin. The vocal choruses and synth-heavy beats of this genre provide a juxtaposition to the rougher techno that is prevalent in many clubs.

The Return of Disco Fever

Italorama Bar at Berghain’s Panorama Bar is spearheading this comeback. Franz Scala, the resident DJ, has been curating events since 2018 that combine modern artists with the great Italo pioneers.

This resurrection connects to German musical heritage more than many realize. Label ZYX originally coined and popularized “Italo disco” in the early 1980s by licensing Italian tracks.

Before Italorama, Scala’s Wrong Era events laid the groundwork alongside producers like Curses and Giulia Gutterer.

Now, DJs including Paramida, Frinda di Lanco, and Ercole Gentile push the movement forward.

Events like the Biscotti Disco Affair, Italomania, and Maledetta Discoteca contribute to strengthening the renaissance.

They’re bringing “human elements” back to electronic music as techno grows harder and faster.

Berlin is at an intriguing juncture where opposing forces coexist. Hard techno pushes boundaries, and Italo disco reintroduces “enriched soul and slower tempos” to popular audiences.

The musical paradox represents cultural inconsistencies. As the demands of the outside world increase, Berlin’s nightlife provides a diverse range of soundscapes for escape and connection.

As Sorvina builds on the success of her EP, keep an eye out for her next festival performances. Expect Italo disco’s impact to spread beyond niche events and into more general club programming in the interim.

Berlin’s ability to simultaneously nurture hip-hop fusion artists and revive disco classics demonstrates its unique position.

Few towns are able to sustain such a wide range of movements while still preserving genuine ties to their musical heritage.

There will probably be more cross-pollination between these scenes in the upcoming months. Berlin keeps demonstrating that seemingly unrelated elements frequently converge to produce innovative music.
