Will Smith has finally returned to music after a twenty-year hiatus. His new album, “Based on a True Story,” dropped on March 28, 2025.

The project marks his first full-length release since 2005’s “Lost and Found.” Early feedback suggests that social media is already taking notice.

Public curiosity has been aroused by two songs in particular: “Int. Barbershop” and “You Lookin’ For Me?” Both deal specifically with his scandals that garner media attention.

Smith’s infamous 2022 Oscar incident remains a cultural touchstone. He struck Chris Rock onstage after the comedian joked about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.

The Academy subsequently banned Smith from attending any Oscar-related events for ten years. He also voluntarily resigned his membership following the incident.

“Int. Barbershop” cleverly mimics casual conversation among friends. The track features voices including DJ Jazzy Jeff and B. Simone discussing Smith’s public perception.

“Will Smith is canceled,” one voice says, while another insists that they will never pardon his behavior. A meta-commentary on public discourse is therefore produced.

The song also alludes to rumors that he won an Oscar for “King Richard.” Some lyrics suggest he had to return his award, though this never actually happened.

On “You Lookin’ For Me?” Smith takes a more defiant stance. He acknowledges his career resilience despite controversy and awards ineligibility.

Smith briefly mentions his complicated relationship with Jada in the lyrics. He suggests people should mind their business about their personal matters.

The West Philadelphia native consulted only two friends about his musical return. According to sources, Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar were his trusted confidants.

Navigating Personal and Professional Reinvention

In 2023, Jada Pinkett Smith disclosed that she and Will had been living apart since 2016. They still appear in public together in spite of this arrangement.

The couple has been married since 1997 and shares two children, Jaden and Willow. Smith also has a son named Trey from his previous marriage.

The 14-track album features several notable collaborations. Big Sean, Teyana Taylor, Russ, and Joyner Lucas all make appearances on the project.

Joyner Lucas previously spoke about his work with Smith. He mentioned that they have created numerous records together beyond what appears on this album.

Smith’s return to music isn’t his first post-controversy project. He starred in Apple’s historical drama “Emancipation” shortly after the slap incident.

Last summer, he reunited with Martin Lawrence for “Bad Boys: Ride or Die.” The action sequel performed exceptionally well, generating over $400 million worldwide.

Smith recently performed at the Premio Lo Nuestro Awards alongside singer India Martínez. Their appearance sparked additional buzz when they seemingly shared an onstage kiss.

Throughout the album, Smith portrays both vulnerability and confidence as he admits to past mistakes while defending his continued relevance in the industry.

With his album, “Based on a True Story,” Smith attempts to reclaim his narrative, as the project serves as both personal catharsis and professional comeback statement.

Will Smith’s musical reappearance indicates his willingness to go forward, and despite widespread criticism, he remains a fascinating and enduring figure in popular culture.
