OpenAI Reveals Plans to Build Robots Again
American artificial intelligence research organization, OpenAI, is set to start focusing on developing robotics technology.
The company revealed that it has a renewed interest in creating humanoid robots. These robots are designed to carry out automated tasks in warehouses and chores around the house, among other functions.
The company announced that their new robotics team will center on “unlocking general purpose robotics and pushing towards AGI-level intelligence in dynamic, real world settings.”
In 2021, OpenAI’s former robotics team was disbanded. At the time, Wojciech Zaremba, co-founder of OpenAI said the team was suspended because of a lack of training data.
However, the company maintained an active interest through investments in corporations like Figure AI Inc. and 1X. These companies are already into humanoid robot development.
What does this mean for AI and AGI?
OpenAI is currently recruiting in order to build a new robotics team from scratch. The company is advertising for the roles of electronic sensing engineer, robotics mechanics engineer and technical project manager.
The electronic sensing engineer would be in charge of the robot sensors. Sensors are what make robots understand the head and tail of their environments and perform tasks.
The robotics mechanics engineer would work on the nuts and bolts, such as gearboxes and motors.
And the technical project manager’s job would be to oversee the development and operations of the product.
Former lead for Meta’s AR glasses, Caitlin Kalinowski is currently leading the effort as OpenAI’s hardware director. She joined the company in November.
This new team’s main focus will be to build advanced robots by combining hardware and software.
One of their main goals is to create robots that are intelligent enough to learn and adapt. In addition, the robots should be able to perform tasks in real world settings effectively.
The recent partnership with Future AI could further give OpenAI’s robotics development a significant boost. This is thanks to access to industrial-scale testing and valuable data insights.
OpenAI’s return to the robotics space aims to integrate AI models with real world systems. This would help in advancing their ultimate objective of achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)
This move from OpenAI suggests that the company sees beyond the constraints of a software-only approach.
Combining generative AI with robotics, may help the company to be able to overcome past challenges.
Some of the challenges the company would overcome include data scarcity and unlocking new challenges.
