Xiaohongshu, dubbed “Little Red Book,” generally simplified by US users to RedNote, soared to the top spot in Apple’s US App Store on Tuesday.

Launched in 2013, Xiaohongshu is one of China’s biggest social media platforms with 300 million users, according to research group Qian Gua.

Described as China’s cousin to Instagram, the app has been particularly prevalent for exchanging thoughts on travel, beauty and fashion.

But while it has ruled the Chinese economy, it hasn’t garnered much popularity beyond the Chinese-speaking world.

Xiaohongshu Globally Accepted Suddenly

Xiaohongshu is increasing in popularity globally in the same week that TikTok may likely go down in the US.

“US smartphone downloads of Xiaohongshu practically doubled within the previous week, comparable to the seven days before” San Francisco-based market research firm Sensor Tower stated.

Within the space of two days, more than 700,000 new users had joined Xiaohongshu, Reuters claimed, citing a person close to the business.

As of Wednesday, the hashtag “TikTok refugee” had collected over 250 million views and over 5.5 million comments.

Several of the American users declared they had joined as an act of defiance against Washington’s onslaught on TikTok.

“Our government is out of their minds if they think we’re going to stand for this TikTok ban,” a user named Heather Roberts stated in a video message on Xiaohongshu, which has collected more than 45,000 likes.

“We’re just going to a new Chinese app, and here we are.”

“This is so much better than TikTok,” another self-proclaimed “refugee” remarked in a video message.

“Americans are coming here … so unhappy you’ll loathe us, but I assure we’ll do our best.”

How American and Chinese Users Interact

The unanticipated shift of US users to Xiaohongshu has offered an unusual forum for Chinese and American users to engage with one other.

“I just want to reassure you that we want to try to find a way to communicate with you, be respectful to your community,” one user said. “We want to be good guests.”

Some American beginners have advised their compatriots to respect Chinese users on the network.

“Just a quick message for the American users coming over here: Please don’t bring politics here.We want to have fun here, we want to enjoy here, and we want to show respect to the ones who are already here,” one user posted.

Most Chinese users have happily welcomed the newcomers, with some even recording video tutorials to aid the new “TikTok refugees” operate the application.

“This could be a historic moment,” one Chinese user commented.

“It feels like so much has changed in an instant.

Ordinary folks from our two countries have never properly bonded before … I hope everyone can utilize this modest chance to engage in significant exchanges of ideas.”
