The Italian car company Maserati was going to unveil its electric MC20 Folgore this year, but it has been cancelled.

The electric MC20 Folgore was first mentioned in 2020 and was supposed to be launched this year.

Maserati has spent years shifting from its signature V-8 engines for quieter, more sustainable electric vehicles.

The company planned to release an electric version of its MC20 sports car this year. However, the electric MC20 Folgore is no longer happening.

The MC20 Folgore was planned to have three electric motors that would produce 700 horsepower.

It would have topped Maserati’s electric car lineup, above models like the electric GranTurismo, Grecale SUV, and GranCabrio convertible.

Maserati had big plans for its electric cars, including the MC20 Folgore. They called these cars the brand’s “new electric dimension” that was, “ready to dominate and represent the Brand’s future around the world.”

Maserati first talked about making an electric supercar in 2020, when it showed off the gas-powered MC20.

The Italian company then promised the 700-horsepower MC20 Folgore, coming soon after the gas-powered MC20.

But when the MC20 car came out in 2022, there was no update on the electric “Folgore” version.

Last year, Maserati said the electric MC20 Folgore would arrive in 2025, but now that plan has been cancelled.

Demand For Electric Cars

The cancellation was first reported by Evo on March 6, after Maserati released an official statement.

According to the statement, “The project was stopped due to the current forecast for insufficient demand in the super sports car market for a battery electric vehicle.”

“Market studies for the super sports car segment and especially for MC2o customers has demonstrated that they are very keen on driving powerful ICE engines… [they] are not ready to switch to BEVs for the foreseeable future,” the statement also read.

The news came a week after a $1.6 billion investment in Maserati by parent company Stellantis was withdrawn.

Instead of making the electric Folgore, Maserati will upgrade the gas-powered MC20. The upgrade will include some features from the high-performance MC20 GT2 Stradale.

Last year, Maserati said it would release a big electric SUV in 2027 and an electric Quattroporte sedan in 2028. It had also planned to make all its cars electric or hybrid by 2028. Maserati stopped making V-8 engines last year.

However, demand for electric vehicles hasn’t grown as quickly as thought and has even dropped in some areas.

The cancellation of the MC20 Folgore and Stellantis’ withdrawal of funds puts Maserati’s electrification plans and brand stability in question.

Aldo, Maserati’s slow sales in China indicate that it needs to address deeper issues beyond just canceling an electric supercar.

The Company’s gas-powered car sales are also declining as its sales fell sharply from 26,600 cars in 2022 to just 11,300 in 2023.

Maserati went from making a $152 million profit to losing $281.5 million during the same period. This shows that things look tough for Maserati.

Based on market trends, some competitors have also changed their minds about going fully electric.
