Google Urges Android Users To Update Their Devices

Google has released a slew of important security updates in recent days, fixing flaws that could seriously endanger users and organizations everywhere.

The Android security update for February, which the tech company recently released, has a zero-day vulnerability.

It fixed at least 46 vulnerabilities throughout its ecosystem and issues with third-party components from Qualcomm, Imagination Technologies, MediaTek, Unisoc, and Arm.

The simplest way to protect your phone from hackers is to keep it updated and running the most recent security patches.

For this reason, if you have one of the top Android phones, you should install the February 2025 Android security updates as soon as possible, as it includes several high-severity updates and customary reference to Play Protect.

The Play Protect security platform has been strengthened and had its scope increased several times in the past year.

It is becoming an increasingly important part of Android’s defense against malware and permission abuse.

“Google Play Protect is particularly crucial for users who install apps from outside of Google Play,” the company notes, adding that it is enabled by default on devices with Google Mobile Services.

Google cautions that there are signs that a flaw in the core of Android “may be under limited, targeted exploitation.”

This February, Google released two sets of updates: the 2025-02-01 and 2025-02-05 security patch levels.

The former is essentially what you’re getting on Pixel phones, and the latter includes the same essentials, alongside extra patches for closed-source third parties.

It also includes kernel variables that don’t necessarily apply to all Androids, making it one of the reasons you might want to consider the Pixel 9 or even the upcoming Pixel 9a.

This is because Google’s Pixel devices receive the latest updates and security patches first.

How to prevent hackers from accessing your Android smartphone

There are a few more steps you can take to protect yourself from hackers in addition to routinely updating your Android phone and the apps that are installed on it.

To safeguard yourself and your device from harmful websites, downloads, and extensions, you should first confirm that Safe Browsing is turned on.

You can decide to go one step further by signing up for Chrome’s Enhanced Safe Browsing to be extra cautious.

This alerts you when your passwords have been compromised in a data breach, in addition to protecting you from the aforementioned threats.

You should also make sure that Google Play Protect is installed and active on your device, even if you are using an Android antivirus program.

The most crucial first step is to keep your Android smartphone updated, but you can significantly reduce your risk of becoming a victim of other cyberattacks by installing a few additional security tools and features.
