AKA was a South African rapper who grew up in Johannesburg and rose to fame after the release of his hit “Victory Lap” off his first studio album, Altar Ego (2011).

He was the top-selling South African hip-hop artist of all time and one of the most well-liked musicians of his period and is frequently considered one of the best South African musicians of all time.

Sadly, he died on February 10, 2023, alongside his friend Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane, who was a chef and entrepreneur.

The two were shot dead while traveling to a nightclub for a performance as part of AKA’s birthday festivities.

The renowned rapper and composer left behind a legacy that goes beyond simple enjoyment; his songs encapsulate universal themes of love, aspiration, and resiliency.

AKA was one of South Africa’s most significant musical voices, and its loss is still being felt.

As we pay tribute to AKA, we examine his top 3 most popular tracks on YouTube, which not only highlight his creative genius but also define an era in South African hip hop.

Fela in Versace

The throbbing hymn “Fela in Versace” was released in 2018 from his album “Touch My Blood.”

The song featuring Nigerian producer Kiddominant is regarded as one of his best-known songs.

The song has a whopping 17 million views and was inspired by Fela Kuti, the renowned Nigerian music icon.

The accompanying music video is a visual feast that perfectly captures the song’s essence: upbeat sounds paired with captivating imagery.

Not surprisingly, “Fela in Versace” has been a significant milestone in AKA’s career, striking a chord with fans both domestically and throughout the continent.

Jika

“Jika,” a song from his third studio album, Touch My Blood, is a charming depiction of AKA’s romantic intentions.

A staggering 16 million people have viewed the song, in which he talks of his passionate thoughts over a sensual midtempo beat produced by Kiddominant.

The song was nominated for Record of the Year in 2020 and won the Best Music Video of the Year South African Music Award.

All Eyes on Me

“All Eyes on Me,” which features a fantastic lineup that includes Burna Boy, JR, and Da L.E.S., is another noteworthy smash.

The song, which was released in 2014 under his “Levels” album, gives listeners a clear picture of the lively and joyous spirit of Mzansi culture while capturing the essence of a house party.

This vibrant collaboration, which has received 13 million views, exemplifies AKA’s unique ability to bring together a variety of artistic voices within the African music scene.
