Exotic Station Wagons making a Comeback
The market has just given station wagons a makeover, going from incredibly unfashionable to lust-worthy.
Wagons, particularly the performance models from Mercedes-AMG, BMW M, and Audi RS, are having a moment, and properly so, after being largely freed from the soccer parent and granola preconceptions.
Mercedes-Benz dominated the market with its E63 Wagon until Audi introduced the RS6 Avant in 2021.
The most recent arrivals include the Audi RS6 Avant and the new BMW M5 Touring. The hot wagon market hasn’t seen much movement outside of the Germans in a while.
We’ll go over these two models, as well as the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Wagon and Audi RS6 Avant. Let’s begin with the Audi RS6 Avant:
Audi RS6 Avant Performance
With a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, all-wheel drive, and plenty of cargo space, the RS6 Avant is like the Mercedes-AMG E63 S.
Its 591-horsepower engine, eight-speed automatic transmission, and Audi’s Quattro technology allow it to sprint from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just over three seconds.
This is improved by the 2024 RS6 Avant Performance model’s upgraded engine, which generates 621 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque.
This specific model has a sleek exterior in Nardo Gray and an interior of black leather with geometric-patterned inserts and red stitching.
Along with the optional RS Sport exhaust, it also has a Bang & Olufsen radio for superb music quality, making it ideal for enjoying the ride.
BMW M5 Touring
The BMW M5 Touring enhances the balance of exceptional driving dynamics and everyday usability. Its powerful V8 engine combined with an electric motor offers impressive performance for both road and track.
With bold wheel arches and M-specific design elements, the third generation of the M5 Touring stands out as the ultimate high-performance all-rounder.
Mercedes AMG E63 S
Since 2005, the Mercedes-AMG E63 S wagon has dominated the high-performance wagon market in the United States. 2018 saw the release of the latest model, which has a potent 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine with over 600 horsepower and a nine-speed automated transmission.
It can match sports vehicles like the Ford GT and Ferrari Roma Spider in terms of acceleration, going from 0 to 60 miles per hour in as low as three seconds.
The 2023 model boasts a carbon fiber exterior package, a Burmester surround sound system, and a Black Nappa leather interior. It is painted hyacinth Red.
Cadillac CTS-V Wagon
Cadillac debuted the CTS-V Wagon, which was basically a four-door Corvette, prior to the introduction of higher performance wagon choices. It had a 6.2-liter V8 supercharged engine that produced 556 horsepower.
It had a limited-slip differential, rear-wheel drive, and a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes.
The car has hydraulically assisted steering, Brembo brakes for powerful stopping force, and magnetorheological dampers. Automotive critics and enthusiasts alike praised this remarkable combo.
However, GM reevaluated its product line because of poor sales throughout its three-year production cycle. As a result, the CTS-V Wagon has gained popularity, especially since there were only 2,000 made.
Volvo V60 Polestar
The V60 was one of several noteworthy performance cars made by Polestar in the middle to late 2010s.
In contrast to Volvo’s usual strategy, Polestar greatly improved the V60’s performance by equipping it with a potent 345 horsepower turbocharged inline-six engine.
Along with enormous brakes, an exceptionally loud sport exhaust, and high-performance Öhlins dampers, this package turned the ordinary V60 into an incredible hot wagon. Unfortunately, just 80 were made.
