Audi R8 Reportedly Returning as Plug-In Hybrid V8

Audi, being one of the acclaimed sports cars of the 21st century, has enthusiasts rejoicing as the iconic R8 supercar prepares to make its triumphant return in 2027.
The third-generation vehicle will switch from the V10 engine of its predecessor to the powerful plug-in hybrid system of the Lamborghini’s twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine.
Development has already advanced beyond the feasibility stage with full support from Audi AG chairman Gernot Dollner.
This revival comes after the beloved supercar ended its 18-year production run in 2024.
The Lamborghini Temerario and the forthcoming R8 will continue their long-standing friendship by sharing its foundations.
Previous R8 generations were twinned with the Gallardo and Huracán models from the Italian manufacturer.
Three electric motors complement the V8, bringing total system output to a staggering 907 horsepower.
Two out of the three motors sit on the front axle to provide all-wheel drive capability, while the third electric motor sits between the engine and the eight-speed dual clutch transmission.
This third motor performs several tasks, such as recovering energy when braking and serving as a starter generator.
Approximately 9.65 kilometers of pure electric driving range are provided by the small 3.8-kWh lithium-ion battery.
This lithium-ion battery only takes 2.7 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h, thanks to the hybrid technology.
More potent Temerario models are anticipated to debut around the same time as the new R8, which might lead to even more powerful R8 Performance variants that can produce more than 1,000 horsepower.
If this happens, the R8 would become Audi’s most potent and swiftest road-legal vehicle ever, beating the current record holder, which is the 680-kW Audi e-tron GT RS.
The Strategic Importance of R8’s Revival in Audi’s Future
Industry analysts speculate that Audi may add the suffix “e-tron” to the model name, which would be consistent with the company’s overall strategy to promote its electrification initiatives.
Audi places a lot of importance on the R8 nameplate’s history. The company sold 44,418 units worldwide between 2008 and 2024, with 687 of the sales going to Australian clients.
The new R8 is also expected to form the basis for future racing endeavors. Reports suggest it will spawn FIA-homologated race cars for endurance events like Le Mans and Nürburgring 24 Hours.
In keeping with the trend of making the Audi the more logical choice, the R8 is likely to look less extravagant and be more useful for everyday use than its Lamborghini sister.
Its comeback strengthens Audi’s position in the high-performance market sector, and the excitement for this resurrected icon will only grow as its anticipated three-year premiere draws near.
