M5 Touring Defies Market Expectations

BMW has been caught off guard by the surprising demand for the new M5 Touring. Production plans have shifted dramatically at the German automaker’s Dingolfing plant.
Initially, BMW projected two-thirds of M5 production would be sedans, with only one-third as Touring models. Reality has forced a significant adjustment to an even 50/50 split.
The shift represents a major miscalculation in BMW’s market forecasting. Sylvia Neubauer, BMW’s VP of Customer, Brand, and Sales, acknowledged the unexpected market response in recent statements.
What’s particularly remarkable is that increased Touring demand hasn’t cannibalized sedan sales.
M5 sedan demand is also beyond estimates, necessitating production increases for both models.
The hybrid powerplant may account for some of the enthusiasm, as the vehicle, which combines a twin-turbo V8 with electric propulsion, produces an astonishing 727 horsepower and 1,000 Nm torque.
Performance remains stellar despite the wagon’s 5,530-pound weight. The M5 Touring still reaches 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, while offering about 25 miles of pure electric range.
BMW’s M division clearly underestimated the American appetite for high-performance wagons. This marks the first time an M5 Touring has been sold in North America.
The model began production in November 2024, four months after the sedan variant. Its world premiere occurred at Monterey Car Week in California in August 2024.
Standard features include adaptive M suspension, electronically controlled dampers, and Integral Active Steering. The wagon comes with M Compound brakes and performance tires on 20/21-inch wheels.
Interior appointments feature a driver-focused cockpit with M leather steering wheel and multifunction seats. BMW includes Merino leather, the Interaction Bar, and a Bowers & Wilkins sound system.
Future Implications for BMW’s Wagon Strategy
The unexpected M5 Touring success may influence BMW’s broader wagon strategy. Product VP Andreas Meyer hinted last August at potential implications for other models.
Meyer specifically mentioned the M3 Touring, which isn’t currently available in North America. Strong M5 Touring sales could open the door for the next-generation M3 wagon.
BMW has already confirmed it’s too late for the current M3 Touring to reach American shores. However, the next generation might cross the Atlantic if this sales trend continues.
Industry watchers question whether this enthusiasm represents a true wagon revival or simply initial enthusiasm from a dedicated niche. The long-term sustainability remains uncertain.
The practical appeal is undeniable, with an expandable cargo capacity from 500 to 1,630 liters. An optional trailer attachment enables towing up to 2,000 kg, increasing versatility.
Some analysts caution against overoptimism, citing probable sales trajectories for previously initially hot vehicles that cooled after core enthusiasts made purchases.
Nonetheless, BMW’s production adjustment indicates valuable flexibility. The company appears willing to follow market demand rather than stubbornly adhering to predetermined projections.
American BMW M enthusiasts can hope this market response translates to a broader wagon portfolio. For now, they’re voting with their wallets for the twin-turbo V8 wagon.
